The Leading Release of the Year: The Artist's Lux Secures the Top Spot.

Initially, this album may look more like a difficult academic examination than the latest pop record from an artist whose previous hit was a collaboration with an international K-pop star. Broken across 4 separate movements and performed in 13 tongues, we have a dizzying symphonic opus that delves into female mystery, spiritual transcendence, and corporal change, often by way of the lens of different women saints. The dissolution of a romance—a theme handled with raw honesty on another major 2025 album—is shot heavenward here, carried by the lush sound of a full symphony orchestra and contributions from an award-winning composer within a long list of contributors. The pure ambition by itself makes the efforts of contemporary artists seem quite small.

Rising Above Academic Pretense

That Lux succeeds in avoid dry academic posturing is nearly a miracle, and complete praise belonging to Rosalía. Although it's not her first project to alchemize the past with modern styles, the stakes are far greater here, and the balancing act far more pronounced. The element that truly raises this fourth album, outside of its multilayered melodies, rich arrangements, and inherent drama, proves to be a core sense of joy. Much like the iconic Björk during her peak, you find a captivating quality to the vocalist's voice that pulls you into its whirlwind. When she is tearing your heart in two, the listener still want to be alongside her for the journey.

A Signature Moment of Exuberance

This exuberant spirit comes forth clearly on the stunning Italian song about Saint Clare. It luxuriates in a string-drenched melancholy for more than four minutes. Suddenly, all the music falls away, and there's a gleeful laugh and a declaration prior to a comically exaggerated string surge thuds down like cartoonish force. The song then shifts into the frenetic single featuring galloping orchestration, a powerful choir, and a surprise appearance from the artist herself.

"The charm of this album lies in the listener rarely exactly know—nor want to know—what you is going to next."

Almost each track finishes at a totally distinct point than how it began. A track explores the transient trappings of fame over a delicate symphony before collapsing in electronic chaos. Elsewhere, a song that recalls the artist's previous rhythmic style starts off moody and brooding, with menacing beats, until sudden flamenco rhythms and a heavenly choir arrive to soften its jagged edges.

The Bridge Between Experiment and Accessibility

A key achievement of Lux involves straddling the gap of radical experimentation and mainstream accessibility. It is no surprise that it has become her highest-charting release to crack the Top 5 of major charts: its heart contains a suite of truly catchy hits. A song sung primarily in the English language builds on a chorus that feels to collect more and more infectious melodies as it spins upward. This feat is echoed on a different powerful track that expands and constricts, weaving layered tunes as a complex tapestry.

  • A dance-infused number charms via its playful, theatrical drama and an anthemic chorus.
  • Lyrically, it shares the cultural impact of other heartbreak anthems, lambasting an ex- partner described as an "psychological terrorist".
  • Across these tracks, the vocals carry a painted-on smile, like a fairy-tale character hiding a knife: "Gold medal in being a scoundrel / You've won the trophy of letdown."

An Opulent Banquet for the Ears

Lux represents popular music on a grand level, a hungry reach for high Art amid of impending AI-generated sameness. It eschews solipsism for glorious elevation, crafting an over-the-top drama that masterfully manages its built-in excess. This is a deep well of hidden treasure that takes patience to fully explore but never feels like a chore. While some major releases of the year felt like a meager scraps, this record is a lavish banquet at which the characters at the table, some intoxicated on sacred drink, flit between discussions about ancient saints, the galvanizing feeling of soul-shattering grief, and common gossip about useless men. In essence, it's a modern-day theatrical production from pop's truly restlessly creative practitioner.
